This oil painting was done by Georgia O'Keefe, mentioned in the primary source of this era. It depicts a cow skull on a black, blue, and red background. "Cow's Skull" was completed in 1931. O'Keefe lived in New Mexico and was inspired by the features of the arid land, as evidenced here. This piece reflects the Modern art movement, a very broad art movement encompassing many different pieces. The fact that this piece was done by a woman shows how their role had changed by the 1930's, and that art was still alive as the Depression hit. As for the painting itself, the realistic implied textures on the skull make it a good focal point, along with the background's contrasting tones drawing your eye to the center. |
